The Neighborhood Wine Tasting

Ten grapes, twenty of us, two bottles each. We taste light to full, whites then reds, bottles in bags until the end. Pick the varietal you want to bring and we’ll do the rest.

How this works

Twenty people each bringing a different bottle would be twenty wines — far too many to actually taste through. So we pair up: ten varietals, two people on each. You get duplicates within every flight, which is the fun part. Two Chardonnays from different producers, poured side by side, and suddenly everyone can taste what “oaked” actually means.

The math works out exactly. A 750ml bottle is about 25oz; at 1.5oz tasting pours that’s 16 people a bottle, so two bottles cover all twenty with slack for seconds on the favorites. Across ten flights it’s about three glasses each over three hours. Water and bread stay circulating all night.

Stay in the $1825 band.

This isn’t stinginess — it’s the whole point. Put a $7 bottle next to a $60 one and the comparison falls apart. Everything in the same range is what makes the side-by-side worth doing.

1. Claim your varietal

Two people per grape, first come first served. You’ll get duplicates in every flight — two Chardonnays from different producers, side by side. Stick to the region hints; that’s what keeps a sweet Riesling from showing up when we wanted dry.

Whites

Can’t find it locally? Grüner Veltliner or Chenin Blanc works as a swap — just note it below.

Before you come

Bottles by 6:30 pm
Temperature is the thing most tastings get wrong. Whites want 45–50°F, reds 60–65°F — and room temperature in Atlanta in September is nowhere near cellar temperature. Drop your bottle early and we’ll get it right: two coolers going, one staging whites, one bringing reds down.
Guided, then loose
We’ll taste the first three or four together — everyone on the same wine, two minutes of talking, then move on. After that the remaining flights go out on stations around the room and you go at your own pace. Structure early while palates are fresh, party after.
$10 a head, $10 a kid
$10 covers the cheese board, glassware, and the rest of the table. Babysitters are $10 per kid, and they’re set up at a house nearby — not at the clubhouse — so the kids get their own space and we get ours. Tell us how many on the form and we’ll make sure we have enough hands. Cash or Venmo on the night; nothing to pay in advance.
Glasses, cards, and the reveal
Stems, scorecards, tent cards, and the cheese board are covered. Every bottle stays bagged until the end — score each one 1 to 5 with a “would buy again” box, and we’ll tally it up and crown a winner per flight before the reveal.
